"Every Seed is a New Beginning".

HOW IT ALL BEGAN...

The seed for "The Well-Seasoned Nest" was sown in May, 2001 in a diner in Milford, CT. My son (now 34) and I were having breakfast, having just gotten to Milford to visit my parents for the weekend. That morning we were discussing, among other things, what I was going to do "with the rest of my life"....

Having retired after 29 yrs. as a high school Home Economics educator, and not being one to really "retire", I did some work in a retail gourmet shop, was an office manager for an arts council, put together a farmers' market in the Hudson Valley, NY, and did the "meet, greet, and seat" function as co-owner for a lovely restaurant in New Paltz, NY.

So, at that diner, I doodled on a napkin; one of those doodles was a nest, the very one you see on the logo for this website, "The Well-Seasoned Nest". The seed was planted, indeed! I would open a shop...

As a young girl, (before the video games age!) I remember "playing" school (did that!) ... and "playing" store. I would gather up some goods, make price tags, and "sell" my wares to any member of the family or neighborhood I could con into "purchasing" them. I remember it being great fun – I could be industrious and creative, right up my alley!

And so, in September 2001, I opened a shop called "The Well-Seasoned Nest" in historic Kingston, the first capital of NYS. The shop featured gifts for the home and garden, and quickly grew from a small store of 750 sq. ft. to a move to a 2000 sq. ft. space in a historic bank building, a cornerstone on a street that is on the National Register of Historic Places.

I loved my work as a shopkeeper, working with people and having beautiful things around me all the time. But, life intervened, and after 5 years, I closed the shop and moved to CT to help out with my aging, ailing Dad, following the death of my Mom.

ABOUT THE WEBSITE...

It seemed like the logical extension, and would give me the opportunity for a new beginning ... once again.

The online shop is designed to be a compilation of wonderful things – all dealing in some way with the home (the "nest"), outdoor living spaces and the garden, birds and their nests, gifts that tie-in to our "themes", and the little nestling. (see photo of one of my two little nestling grandchildren, named Hannah) We tend to choose items for the site that are organic in nature;  that is, simple and close to nature, sometimes whimsical, putting some fun in functional.

Our goods come from jaunts here and there, flea markets to gift markets - a hand-picked selection of items subject to constant change as inventory moves, and always with our savvy customer (you!) in mind. Occasionally, there will be one-of-a-kind items, literally – something that just made us say "Gotta Have It!" and we'll put it on the site. When it's gone, it's gone!

When we find products made in the USA that are wonderful and cost-effective, we choose them, and will include that fact in the product description.

Along with our product line, we hope to offer you some "Nesting Material" - inspirational components, if you will - things pertaining to our themes that will help you "season your nest" and make it one-of-a-kind, uniquely yours.  It is our intent to stay close to the idea of the home being a haven, a refuge, a compilation of all factors that bring us comfort and and happiness.

We hope that you will help us make this site grow to be what you would like it to be through your purchases, but as much through your comments and suggestions as we build the nest, one twig at a time, and make it comfy for you! We'd love you to linger and return again soon...

May you have many wonderful beginnings in your life!   Keep sowing those seeds ...
