A Blessing in Disguise?

2010

It has been a little over a week my position was terminated.  It’s been a busy one, and I daresay, other than the financial insecurity, I seem to be finding my way a little more with each passing day.

Ethel Merman said, “I work as often as I want and yet I’m as free as a bird.”  How true for me as well!   I have been working hard, but enjoying it so much more than the office routine I had been in at my “day job”.

The book ” Crush It! “ by Gary Vaynerchuk was recommended to me a couple of months ago by Michael Stearns, co-owner and CEO of  Mighty Merchant, the company who did such a great job of designing and implementing my website. The book shows how anyone can build a career around what they’re passionate about. It is based on the premise that making a living by building content around your passion isn’t simple and it doesn’t happen overnight. What it is, however, is fulfilling and in most cases just as profitable, if not more so, than your previous job.  At the time I purchased the book, my “day job” was secure, and I used the book as a means and motivation to achieve a future goal.  Funny the way life is some times!  I now have the time to take my passion and run with it – how divine!

What I have observed/learned in the past week has been somewhat of an eye opener for me.   I’ve enjoyed the silence of the morning after the rush hour traffic has passed.  I’ve had time to think, rather than to act/react because I didn’t have time to think!   I can take time with some of the ” little things”, unlike before – like tightening cabinet knobs, reorganizing a pantry shelf, putting a few plants under the shower to rinse off winter’s dust.

I continue to be amazed at how quickly the day goes.  Several times this past week I have glanced over at the clock and noticed it’s one or two o’clock and I haven’t had lunch nor yet showered!  Marcia Petrie Sue wrote an article about time management that  is a good read, and will be helpful to me as I begin to better PLAN the days ahead.  It is still an odd feeling for me that I actually have a block of time in which to do what I need and want to do – so refreshing!  I need now to better define my goals and work toward them in some organized fashion.

I’ve always been intriqued with people’s work spaces.  As for my work space – well, in itself, a work in progress …  but becoming more workable each day.  It is a glorious space, full of sunlight, cozy, with great views of the Long Island Sound.  I’ve been spending much time organizing and sorting to store like things together and near where I will use them. (remnants of past learnings from my Home Economics Ed undergrad courses!)  Here’s a few  shots of where it’s at …

But soon!  and I  look forward to the day.  So very much I want to do.  Yes, indeed, I do believe losing my job could actually have been a blessing in disguise…time will tell.  The onus is on me…and I’m up to the task.

Now, I must get working on those piles…

If you have an interesting work space you’d like to share, please send it along for a future post…love to see it!

A Special Little Christmas House

Years back, when my first husband was alive, he delighted me one Christmas with a handmade antique dollhouse.

Not a dollhouse in the true sense of the word, I guess, as it has no “rooms” per se.  The interior is one big open space.  It does, however, have a front entryway and a back door with a little back porch.  The little house has a time worn finish of crackled and peeling paint;  its window inserts are plastic.

I’ve always considered the dollhouse one of my favorite possessions.  I so love the crudeness of it, and have always wondered for whom it was originally made.  It lends itself so well to seasonal and holiday adaptations.

My little house has been in storage for several years as my life passed through its ups and downs.  For the years I was in retail, I didn’t have a “normal” Christmas, I DID Christmas – wrapping gifts and making gift baskets for customers till late Christmas Eve day.  There was little time and less energy left for tree and home decorating for the holiday.

This year, as my life has settled some, I will have a Christmas!  I purchased and finished a “proper” table for my beloved little house and adorned it with some holiday finery.  I put a string of lights inside that glow through the windows in the evening.  The small pine cone wreath I made years ago received its due repair.  I had missed my little house!

Now I can look forward for years to come, God willing, to my grandkids enjoying the house with Gramma K and Uncle Frankie.  It will keep its place of prominence in our home, my special little Christmas house.

Once again, change is in the air, and it’s more than just the season.

It has been a really long time.

I acknowledge it, and it certainly has been on my mind.  It has been months (literally!) since my last post, but one has to do what seems right at the time, and that’s what I’ve done.

The details are too lengthy to go in to here, but let’s leave it at this, at least for now.

I’ve moved from my sweet little cape in West Haven to a home even closer to the shoreline into a brand new house, with just enough garden space to keep me interested and challenged.

My guy and I are nesting.

We’ve combined forces, and set up housekeeping in this new place.  It’s a really nice house, with an open floor plan and great views of the Long Island Sound from practically all angles of the house.  Wonderful!

The kitchen is large and easy to navigate.

I have a great little office/studio that I’m still setting up, with all I need to operate my website business and satisfy those creative needs so pervasive in me.  (pictures to come)

We have terrific, fun neighbors.  Great neighborhood restaurants.  The beach is just 700 ft. away and there’s lots of  places to walk and enjoy the beauty of this coastal area.

All in all, my time away was well spent.

We’re getting nested.

I have much to share….

It’s All About Life Change!

With thanks to you who have called and emailed about the fact that I have not placed a blog post for some time.  It’s nice to know people notice, care, and are concerned about someone else’s well-being.  The reason for my “non-appearance” is all good “stuff”, and be assured that my absence from the world of blogging is a temporary thing!

My personal life is taking a new direction – along a path that brings me much happiness as well as a renewed sense of motivation, purpose and enthusiasm.  I will share details in time, but, for now, please bear with me …  and keep checking back.  Thanks for your patience!

I think of life itself now as a wonderful play that I’ve written for myself, and so my purpose is to have the utmost fun playing my part.
