Our Family Thanksgiving Gathering

2008
11.24

It was a very special day!  On Saturday, our entire (albeit small) family gathered for the afternoon to celebrate Thanksgiving.  It has become our tradition to do it the weekend prior to the actual holiday, allowing the varying family segments to be off with the inlaws and other halves of their families on Thanksgiving Day.

It had been a touch and go week, as far as keeping the clan healthy and well enough to celebrate.  And, celebrate, we did!  We started the day with cocktails and apps at my brother’s and then went to a local restaurant who indulged us with a private room and delicious meal.  For the “cocktail one and a half hours” each of us contributed our assigned specialties;  Dad brought his secret recipe Whiskey Sours.  He’s been doing them for quite some time now, and even folks who don’t like whiskey sours enjoy these!

But it was not all about the food and the liquid refreshment, as good as it was.  When you looked around the room, you saw the smiles.  You felt the spirit of family.  The seven youngest (Dad’s great grandchildren) got re-acquainted, and the adults had the opportunity to catch up on each other’s lives.  Mom was missing, having passed away a few years ago, but her spirit was there, too.   One could not help but think that, even in these troubled times, there was much to be thankful for.  You can’t put a price on the sense of well-being, security, appreciation and love that a gathering like this can muster.  It saddens me to think of families that are estranged and/or apart.  I wish they could feel the wave of emotion that comes and stays, and heartens your life and your being.

I hope everyone who reads this post finds much to be thankful for on their Thanksgiving Day, no matter what the venue for their gathering.  And may we all continue to look for ways to show our thankfulness, and spread the spirit to others who are more challenged to find it whatever be the reason.

Share with us – what is it you’re most thankful for this Thanksgiving?  We’d love to celebrate the goodness with you!

Cranberry Relish Gets Rave Reviews

Just a quickie! I was thinking that a lot of folks out there might just be planning their Thanksgiving menus if, like me, you’re avoiding the blustery wind outside and doing some things internally domestic. For several years, I’ve made this Cranberry Relish recipe for Thanksgiving, and it has never failed to have people demanding the recipe.  I don’t remember where the recipe came from, but it’s worth checking out.

The relish is fresh tasting, has great texture, and the flavors really work well together.  Sure beats canned cranberry sauce!  And, so simple … I’ve also enjoyed it with pork and chicken.

Here’s the link:  Fresh Homemade Cranberry Relish

Hope you like it!

Tricks and Treats

Well, I just had to share.  Halloween pictures of the grandkids showed up in my mailbox, and I thought them worthy of a special post.  Little Hannah, aka Abby Cadabby!!!, soon to be 2, was in the midst of a nasty cold.   She generally has the sweetest disposition, but was feeling beyond “punky”.

Her good buddy, CJ, aka Cookie Monster, had a runny nose as well.  (The day care personnel must spend half their time wiping noses!)

And then there’s baby Jack – here, a not-so-fierce lion.  He was born June 5, and is a jovial little one.  Natch, he got the cold about 2 days later!

I spent last weekend with this dearest little family in my life.  Makes me realize how precious life is, how important good friends are, how fragile relationships can be, and how much my family means to me.  This has all been said before, but you cannot imagine how wonderful it is to be a “grandma” till you’ve had the opportunity to be one…..

I know there’ll be more to come on this subject!!!!

Fall along the Shoreline

The crowds are gone.  There is a sense of tranquility.  I feel a gentle, cool breeze on my face, but the water is calm.  Leaves from the nearby trees saunter nonchalantly to the ground;  their vibrancy diminished.  The route along the shoreline near my home has become a familiar one to me, and offers me serenity from the often hectic life I lead.

My mind wanders, sorting out the details of the day ahead.  I like this time in my routine – it’s “me” time.  I embrace the nuances of nature around me – the “busyness” of the birds as they go about their daily rituals (as will I!), the changes in the landscape that are inherent with the season, the gulls swooping down in search of food.

My walk over,  I pass by a building on the way to my car.  I notice slight movement , and stop to observe – a praying mantis.  Such a graceful, yet odd-looking creature…

Let the day begin!
